SWEET JABUA AND TORRENT IN TBILISI

By Mate Melia

May roses took thirsting for Spring Tbilisi, and the dampness swallowed flower fragrance. So did our “modern show-business” absorbing aroma of Georgian tune.

Many of our singers, celebrated and not, run around the restaurants, bars and clubs of Tbilisi full with records in the pocket. To be a singer, that’s what most easy today. For that, you have only to get a cassette, record a few chord with PC and no matter how far you are from the real Georgian music, like our mentality to democracy and Abkhazians to literacy, record an album of fame. There’s no problem with it. Computer may do anything for you so that even you astonish of your talent and professionalism. Then you waste some money and time on design, show and accompaniment and finally get on stage doing what? Dancing and opening a mouth to accord the own record.
What do our children and we listen to? – A record produced for just 100 laries. Is that music? Where is the real one? Which was it? I can’t remember its previous location, but now it’s true that the real Georgian music is somewhere back.
But it’s not dead yet, thanks to god. May 22 was the day when melody torrent in Tbilisi Philharmonic Hall took the people thirsting for live music. Music took them in the sky and threw far back to old memories.
Soon the moon appeared on the black sky, spring shed a smell of flower, and regret captured everything around. Regret is about the hardest case of Georgian wealth and grandeur caused by today’s weakness. Georgian song is in trouble today, but let’s discuss it later. Venetian mimes arose with a tinkle of mystical bells and heralded about the Georgian music, tune, sound and song are alive.
The light cleaved the space and the cadres of childhood films appeared. A little girl with short dress and goggle eyes singing the childhood hymns came out, the girl of our, our street and town dreams.
Soon Aphrodite came into sight and the nightingale like flower rose on the scene. She was as beautiful, charming and nice as in old times with the voice going deep in the heart and conquering everyone. Georgian and Russian romances took the hall. Near at hand David Evgenidze played the grand piano burning with red flame and threatening Zeus. Orchestra sounded quiet and shrilly. This was the celebration of Maia Jabua and the Georgian music.
This was the poesy and the voices of tenderness, the tenderness of woman with grace and beauty accompanied with dazzling red, yellow and black coloured dresses by Bakur Bakuradze. No phonogram, only the live music and tune! The highest design! Dresses! Decoration! Dance and the goddess Maia Jabua presenting eight new songs for her upcoming album with friends Temur Tatarashvili, Eka Kakhiani, David Evgenidze and Flash.
It was not a benefice or a celebration; it was an explosion of Georgian songs, nostalgia of Russian romances and a woman loved by whole town. The endless ovation and emotions followed next.
Jabua has presented eight new songs written by David Evgenidze, Eka Kakhiani, Liliko Nemsadze and Rusa Morchladze on the words of Irina Sanikidze. Songs have been produced by Zurab Makhniashvili and Kote Nonikov. As to show itself, it’s been directed and produced by David Doiashvili who made a fantastic diffusion of music and scenario presented without host and superfluous words, only music and songs. Singing songs – “Mikvarkhar shen ak am darbazshi” … “Me veli gazapxuls” … “Vin momtatsebs neta guls?” etc. Maia Jabua had once again conquered the audience.
We couldn’t yet describe the income of show, but can make sure that on 22nd of May the ceremony held in Tbilisi Philharmonic Hall defeated the fake and phonogram music. Jabua was so beautiful and charming that… It was a music and not business; Maia Jabua and not anyone else. Tbilisi is missing spring… Tbilisi is missing torrent…
